Umrah in Islam is a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that can be undertaken at any time of the year. A Muslim devout visits Ka’bah, to perform Tawaaf (circumambulation) around it and walks seven times between Safaa and Marwah. A performer of Umrah shaves or cuts his hair to put off his Ihraam.

Rituals of Umrah

  1. Ihraam: The pilgrim enters the state at the Meequat.
  2. Tawaaf: It refers to circulations around the house.
  3. Sa’y: One has to walk seven times between holy As-Safaa and Al-Marawah
  4. Tahal-lul: This marks the conclusion of Umrah, the pilgrim starts following lawfulness again.

Procedure for Umrah:

  1. Preparation of Ihram: A person combs the hair, shapes the beard, trims mustache, cuts nail, and removes unwanted body hairs.
  2. One has to purify the body, shower or perform wudu.
  3. Internal purification is done with sincere repentance of your sins.
  4. Ihram Sheet: Men have to wear white colour sheet around the waist and cover upper portion with another sheet. Women can wear ordinary clothes.
  5. Nafl Salah: It is not makruh time, offer two rakahs of Nafl or by covering the head.

Expiation of Sins: According to Islam, simply performing the Umrah will expiate all of your sins. An Umrah done with right conviction holds the power to relieve all your past baggage.

Points to be taken care of:

  1. Do your homework: Learn about Makkah and Madinah. Learn about Umrah. Also, make a copy of your passport and important documents as a precautionary measure.
  2. Company makes a man: Having good company can make a lasting impact on your journey. Are the people you are with going to encourage you to pray Tahajjud in the Haram and do extra tawaf? Choose the right company.
  3. Know the rules of Ihram: There are simple rules that people can violate without thinking. It is important to be extremely careful.
  4. Barber hygiene: At the conclusion of Umrah, it is customary for men and women to cut their hair. You must maintain the basic hygiene and modesty without being in a hurry to finish.
  5. Take some Vaseline: This comes in very handy
  6. Visiting the Rawdah: The Rawdah is a piece of paradise found in the Prophet’s Masjid in Madinah.The best time to try to visit the Rawdah (for men) is at night.
  7. Visit the sites in Madinah: The best time to visit the sites is in the morning time sometime between sunrise and Dhuhr prayer. You can visit the site of the battle of Uhud as well as Masjid Quba, which is the first masjid built by the Prophet Muhammad
  8. Contact back home: Be connected always and keep your loved ones informed of your whereabouts.
  9. Talk with people: There are people from all over the world. Makkah and Madinah are places of gathering for people from all over the world. Hence one must engage in dialogue.
  10. Make dua: Simple to say, but very important to do. Make dua for yourself, for others, for the entire Ummah.
