The Kumbh Mela, is the largest mass gathering of Hindu pilgrims in the world and is considered as one of the most important events in Hinduism. The venue for Kumbh Mela is chosen out of one of the four cities of- Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik, and Ujjain, in a rotatory order. Thus it occurs once every twelve years at each destination. The Kumbh Mela in Allahabad is organised at Prayaga which is the site of Triveni Sangam i.e. the convergence of the three holy rivers of Ganga, Yamuna, and Sarasvati. Ardh Kumbh Melas are held at Haridwar and Allahabad every six years. A great number of Hindus arrive at the fair to bathe in the holy rivers, which is considered as cleansing ritual for all past sins.

All the temples are beautifully decorated with lights and flowers to mark the occasion. This fair is remarked to be the true representation of Hindu culture and is attended by a large no. Of foreigners who wish to encounter the Indian traditions and rituals in its truest form. Many sadhus and saints of Hinduism especially come down to attend this event from their respective places of meditation or 'Samadhi’

The Magh Mela is spread over a period of 45 days. It is actually a smaller version of Kumbh Mela. Every year, the Magh Mela commences on the day of Makkar Sankranti in January, which is the first important bathing day according to the religious Hindu calendar.

Allahabad Ardh Kumbh Mela 2019 Dates

The 2019 Allahabad Ardh Kumbh Mela will be starting on January 15, 2019 i.e. Paush Purnima and will end on March 4, 2019, i.e. Maha Shivratri and will be held on the banks of Triveni Sangam in Prayag. The bathing schedule for the fair is given below:

Arrangements and Transportation

Special arrangements are made by the Uttar Pradesh government for the devotees during this time. A great no. of buses ply on the route to and fro the pilgrim areas for easy movement. A township of tents is created on the banks of Sangam for the accomodation of millions of tourist visiting the fair. Appropriate security measures are taken and emergency medical services are set up for the pilgrims. "Lost and Found" camps are also set up and manned by the local police so that nobody gets lost in the fair. Allahabad is feasibly connected with the rest of the country through roadways, railways and airways with the airport just 12km from the main city. Buses, cab services and local transportation are available throughout the city.
